Playoff season is here. The only thing that excites me slightly more than my team making it to the post-season is the food that accompanies it.
It just so happens that Crock-Pot® came out with a new line of slow cookers. This theme is particularly appropriate:

I was about to order a Patriots Crock-Pot® until I saw a damask design. My weakness.
The minute I received my lovely slow cooker I knew I would have to plan something special for the playoffs.
Slow cooker bread it is! Why instead of the oven? I find my oven occupied with so many other dishes, that this frees up time and space. Place the dough in, turn on and walk away. The best part is that if you leave it on for a few minutes too long it will not burn as it would in an oven.
It was no easy task, as I kept ending up with scorched bottoms. I stumbled upon a very helpful tip, by Artisan Bread in 5 who suggested using parchment paper. Much better.
You can just make plain dinner rolls, add in herbs, or try adding your team colors like I did. It’s fun to see friends or family bite into a dinner roll and discover their favorite team colors inside. If food coloring is not your thing, use natural means to color your dough.
- 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter (Plus a little more)
- Optional: 1 egg
- Optional: Food gel paste or coloring in your team colors
In mixing bowl, combine sugar, 2 cups of flour and yeast and mix.
Heat water to 120-130 degrees F. You can use an instant read thermometer. They sell them at Target.
Pour 1 cup of the warm water into mixing bowl with softened butter and mix. Then, sprinkle in 1/4 – 1/2 cup of flour mixed with the salt depending on how sticky your dough is.
Turn mixer up and knead with the dough attachment for about 5 minutes.
Place in lightly oiled bowl and cover to rise for at least an hour.
He has risen.
Note: You need warm temperature for dough to rise. Like 80 degrees. Many homes will not be that warm, especially this time of year. A little trick I do is preheat the oven for about 1-2 minutes until it feels warm but not scorching hot. Turn off preheat and place bowl inside oven with door closed. Repeat if it cools down substantially Careful not to leave preheat on for too long!
If you want to customize your rolls with your team colors, rip off a few pieces of dough. Knead in food coloring until desired color (you may want some food handling gloves to prevent dying your hands).
Make sure dough not being worked with stays covered.
Roll out colors and layer. Cut into squares.
Wrap uncolored dough around squares to make rolls. Place in parchment paper-lined Crock-Pot®.
Optional: Use a cookie cutter to cut out more colors or any shape and glue to the top of each roll using a beaten egg.
Turn slow cooker on to high and cook until firm and temperature in bottom (use instant read thermometer) reads 190- 205 degrees. Mine actually took over two hours. Yours may be different so just check from time to time on your first try.
Another great tip from Artisan Bread in 5: The bread does not come out browned or crusty on top so if you would like that effect, brush with melted butter and broil or bake at high temp in oven for a few minutes. I highly recommend it.
I love how the colors peek through.
So good with chili. Or warm them up and slather with butter.
