Football Play Cake

As much as we always jump for the ever so predictable  football desserts come every Superbowl Sunday (guilty), I figured it would be fun to veer away from the brown pigskin to something a little more unique this year. Yeah, even I grow tired of looking and football-shaped cakes.

 

So, this year I decorated a football-themed cake that isn’t an actual football. So there. Come back next year when I relapse and go right back to making brown foods with white laces. Ugh, food bloggers can’t help it.

 

In addition to showing you this fun new spin on football-themed desserts, I have included a few tips on how to make black frosting that won’t stain your mouth. Ewe.

 

Ingredients for Football Play Cake 

- Baked cakes (2-3)

-Frosting (heap loads of it, people)

- Piping bag

-Couplers for piping bag

- Round piping tip

- Grass piping tip

- Green, black, and white sixlets

- Black Americolor gel paste

- Green Americolor gel paste

-Optional: Black cocoa

 

 

Bake 2-3 round cakes (I used three). Any flavor is fine.  Use a knife to trim the top, bottom or sides of each cake layer to make them as congruent and symmetrical as possible. Layer each cake on top of the other, spreading an even layer of frosting in between. Carefully spread a very thin layer of frosting over the entire outside of the layered cake so that it does not crumble anywhere.  Keep covered with plastic wrap until decorating.

 

When dying your black frosting beware that it can leave partygoers with black tongues. No es bueno, so here are a few tips to try to prevent people from leaving the dessert table with stained teeth:

* Add in black cocoa to your frosting before using food coloring. It will not only make it taste like Oreos, but it darkens your frosting so you don’t have to dilute it as much with the coloring. If you have a hard time getting your hands on black cocoa, any chocolate frosting will help.

* Do not use Wilton or a regular food coloring. Use a good quality gel intended for cake decorating. See ingredient list for ordering.

* A day ahead of decorating, color frosting a shade or two lighter than the black you desire. Frostings and icings dyed with food coloring tend to deepen when left to sit over a period of time. Simply dye then leave in fridge overnight. This means less coloring.

Use a long, flat spatula (preferably a cake spatula) to spread  and cover cake. Try to keep amount of frosting even all over. Don’t be concerned with making it super smooth, but if you must, refrigerate for a little while then use a spatula dipped in water and wiped dry to smooth out the sides. Run the spatula lightly across around the side, without picking it up.

 

Tip: Make sure to have pieces of parchment paper under the cake before frosting to prevent a messy plate or cake stand.

Use a spatula to spread a little green colored frosting on the top, then pipe out green grass across. You do this by placing a coupler into a piping bag, fill with green frosting, and screw on a tip for the grass effect. Squeeze out a little dollop at a time. and move to the next section.

 

Feel free to pipe a little more grass around the bottom edge as well for a fun effect. Then, lay out a pattern of green, white, and black Sixlets candies along the top and bottom edge of the cake.

Fill a piping bag with white frosting then pipe out X’s and O’s around the side. Add a few arrows. It’s okay if they aren’t accurate football plays. Anyone who would point that out is a TROLOLOLOLOL.

Easy right? Once you pick up the tools it does not really require all that much.

 

This football play cake can be made for birthdays, Superbowl, tailgating parties, professional and college, oh, and this could work for other sport themes as well.

The best part about this cake? I didn’t have to swallow my pride and make something with team colors. ‘Cuz if the Pats aren’t in the Superbowl, then I don’t really want to have to celebrate them in any way. Especially with food.

    Good tips about the black. I haven’t actually tried adding black to my dark chocolate buttercream yet but it’d probably work quite well. I’m about to put some black icing together but it’s for a competition cake on styrofoam so nobody should lick it anyway. Then again we do get some weird judges… ;D
