The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake and Cupcakes

Although my business has rewarded me in ways that I cannot begin to convey in writing, it certainly has required many sacrifices.

For one, reading. I was a closeted book geek as a kid. Now, I’m lucky if I have time to read a couple of pages before passing out, drooling on my pillow.

Adults should read kids’ books. They might remind us about messages we don’t take the time to think about. Books like The Giver, Love You Forever, The Giving TreeThe LoraxTuck Everlasting. . .

So The Very Hungry Caterpillar teaches us.. to eat a lot? Get back to me on this one.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic book that we enjoyed growing up and still remains a fascination for our own children today. This is a simple cupcake topper for any skill level in cake decorating. All you need is some candy, sprinkles, and chocolate.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake and Cupcakes

For the cupcakes:

- green candy melts

- mini confetti circle sprinkles

- red and green gum balls

- long shaped sprinkles in purple or blue

For the cake:

- green candy melts

- large confetti sprinkles

- red and green giant gobstoppers

- blue licorice string

- tootsie rolls

- mini number 7 cookie cutter

For the cupcakes, you will want to select one red gumball and about three green gumballs per cupcake. I used large gumballs, but keep in mind this can make the cupcakes top heavy. They will sit on the cupcake but require slightly more careful handling.

Melt your green candy melt. Use a toothpick to dab two dots onto a red gumball, then adhere two yellow confetti circle sprinkles. Dab more candy melt and create green circles onto each confetti sprinkle. Create a third circle as the mouth.

This would be a head for the cupcakes.

Once candy melt begins to cool, but right before it hardens, dip in the tip of a long purple or blue sprinkle/piece licorice string and hold against the top of the gumball. Hold and blow cool air until it hardens and adheres.

This is using a large gobstopper for the cake.

It is helpful to steady both hands against a table while holding the long sprinkle against the gumball. If the candy melt is cool enough the sprinkle should stick to the gumball quickly. Add a second long sprinkle, then repeat for the rest of the red gumballs.

If you are making the toppers ahead of time, make sure to store the caterpillar heads in a safe spot as the pieces can break off easily.

For the cake, the gobstoppers are large enough to add legs. Roll out pieces of tootsie rolls with a rolling pin. Use the mini number 7 cookie cutter to cut out your legs. Stick a leg on each side of the green gobstoppers.

Arrange one red gumball/gobstoppers towards the front of a frosted cupcake or cake.

Line up three green gumballs/gobstoppers behind the red. Your Hungry Caterpillar cake may be large enough to add more green gobstoppers. You may need to glob a little frosting on the bottom of each gumball/gobstopper to stay better. Wet, fresh frosting will hold them more so than dry, hardened frosting.Once you have placed everything onto the frosting, refrigerate so that they harden in place.

I miss reading kids’ books.

Ive been re-reading my childhood books lately actually- mainly cause I’m tight and don’t want to fork out $$ for new books haha.
I’ve re-read all my Enid Blyton books “far away tree” and “the enchanted woods” loved all those books. And cause they are kiddy books they don’t take long to read before you fall asleep drooling haha.
Also going over my high school English books you had to do essays on and find I can now understand them a lot better than when I was in high school so re-educating myself
Wish I had a child so I could make these cupcakes, maybe i’ll just eat them myself

@Kim, I know it’s amazing how reading an old book from childhood changes your understanding of it.

I will try to add a few to my reading list. Currently have two adult non-fictions sitting on my night stand, half-read. : /
