Boston Strong Marathon Sneaker Cookies

Last year was a rough year for my Boston/New England homies. Death, injury, chaos and fear on the day of one of our most cherished hometown events.

I recall sitting in my living room half-way across the country, feeling totally helpless. Suffocating. All I had to work with was the cruddy news station delivering misinformation, and a short window of call and text time before the city shut down their towers.

With communication I received from friends and families involved in the incident/investigation, I realized the reports on network news stations were frequently BS. Reporters so greedy to break some type of news, they were pulling the trigger too early. Imagine them in bed. Sorry to burst your politically biased bubble but CNN AND Fox News both sucked. Deeply sucked. WNBC too, while we’re at it.

So during the days that followed, a few compadres and I resorted to gathering more accurate reports from live police radio streams. There’s no BS’ing those.

If you followed the marathon bombing, and the events that ensued that week, it is fascinating to hear it all unravel this way. (Note: The second and third audio clips are very long, the fourth is a very short version of those two. If you have time while working on something else, play the long ones and listen along).

For “short cut” listening, check out first video and fourth.

The initial response to the bombing.

I listened to this  next video live with a group of friends (well, I was still in TX, but “together” online chatting). I refused to even get up to go to the bathroom.

Cliff’s Notes version of the suspect capture, cut down for your ADD listening pleasure.

Note: This is not the actual dialogue, it has been edited and pieced together quite a bit, but you get the idea.
“Their courageousness and their tenacity in solving this vicious crime that occurred in our city…It’s a proud day to be a Boston police officer, thank you all.” - Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis

To celebrate our resilience and determination to continue doing what we do, please consider supporting a runner of the Boston Marathon this year. My friend Angie, will be running for the American Liver Foundation, and for Boston.

Aside from donating, making marathon sneaker cookies would be a great way to support any friend running a marathon. They work their tushies off training, and raising money for a good cause. Show them a little love and thanks.

These sneaker cookies are easier than they look, and they will love the laces as a fun added touch.

Begin by rolling out your cookie dough on a piece of parchment paper.

Use a sneaker cookie cutter to cut out sneaker shapes then peel the excess cookie dough off.

Use a piping tip, such as a #2, to poke the lace “holes” at the top. Freeze the cookies then bake according to the link instructions in ingredient list.

After filling a piping bag with icing, Pipe out a line around the cookie, leaving space for the tongue, sole, and tab. Also pipe a line around each lace hole.

Then, fill in the outline. Use a toothpick if you need to push icing around and fill in holes. Allow icing to dry before next layer.

Use blue to outline the lace holes. Also, draw a little half-circle and fill in for the tongue of your shoes.  Fish by drawing a wide “v” near the back of the sneaker cookie, then a swoop under the laces by the toe. Your sneaker cookies are really going to start coming together.

This part is not hard, you just need to wait in between steps to dry. Draw a line along top of tab (back of shoe by ankle) and slope down until you reach the front of tongue. Then, outline a diamond-like shape in sole. Wait to dry, then outline the two other parts of sole and fill in with more white icing.

Next, you will fill in tab with grey icing (mix a couple of dots of black food coloring with icing), and maybe add a “B” for Boston Strong. If it is another marathon event, you could use the runner’s first name initial or the city it takes place in. It’s nice to personalize your marathon sneaker cookies!

You can mix a little silver luster dust with a touch of water or alcohol (as in, Vodka) to make a thick paste and paint over grey for a silver effect.

For portability, place them in clear solo cups filled with shredded paper. Attach ribbons that say “FINISH” on it. I painted mine with puff paint. Use double-sided tape or scrapbooking glue dots to adhere ribbons to the cups.

You can also print out a number, attach safety pins to each corner and tape to cup. If you like, here is a printable.

You can wrap in plastic and tie with a ribbon so cookies do not fall out.

What an awesome idea. I think the field that ran this year ran for all of us, whether we’re marathon runners or we run only when chased. I have a feeling this feeling is here to stay for the Boston Marathon – so much pride, so much passion.
